Bulk carrier Shao Shan 5, owned by Chinese shipping company Cosco, spilled several tons of heavy fuel during bunkering operation at Santos Port in Brazil. The vessel was taking fuel from the terminal when the hose disconnected and an unknown quantity of bunkering oil spilled onto the deck before leaking into the water. The leak spread to the Santos Channel. Strong current and winds then drifted it down the channel and leaks reached the shore. The affected areas were quickly secured by oil booms and cleansing began. Local authorities started an investigation and the ship will be detained until further notice. Traffic in the port and Santos Channel was affected by the accident, but not blocked.
Shao Shan 5 was built in 2012 by Huangpu Shipbuilding in Guangzhou, China.
