Update on oil transfers and bunkering procedures in Ghana

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has issued a shipping notice on the mandatory procedures for the transfer of oil and other substances, reports local correspondent Budd Ghana.

GMA Shipping Notice 017 (Procedures for the Transfer of Oil and Other Substances) includes bunkering operations and were developed to ‘safeguard oil transfer activities’ within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction.

GMA said that any failure to meet GMA requirements could result in the levying of “heavy, non-negotiable fines”.

Budd Ghana advise of a November 2020 incident where the fine levied for the transfer of petroleum products without GMA approval (48h) had increased fourfold, to $240,000.
