Singapore protests at Malaysian port extension plans

Singapore has protested at neighbour Malaysia’s plan to extend the Johor Bahru port limits in a manner which it said encroached into Singapore Territorial Waters off Tuas.

There have been a series of disagreements between the two countries over parts of the Singapore Strait. The Singapore Transport Ministry said on Tuesday December 4th that it had asked Malaysia to reverse the steps it had taken on the port limits “to reflect the sovereignty of Singapore over the waters in question”.

The Singapore ministry also said that Malaysian vessels had repeatedly intruded into Singapore’s territorial waters over the past two weeks off Tuas, in the city-state’s west, stating that “Singapore has protested the unauthorised movements of and purported assertions of sovereignty by these vessels, which are inconsistent with international law”.
