Reminder to companies shipping hazardous waste for disposal

Companies planning to ship hazardous waste for disposal off the Isle of Man have been reminded that they must inform the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA).

Hazardous waste includes:

• asbestos

• chemicals, eg brake fluid or print toner

• batteries

• solvents

• pesticides

• non-edible oils

• equipment containing ozone depleting substances

• hazardous waste containers.

The Isle of Man’s DEFA must seek the permission of the UK Environment Agency for such shipments to take place to England and Wales.

As DEFA is about to renew its permissions with the UK for the next three years, the deadline for notifications from companies planning to export hazardous waste for disposal in 2017, 2018 and 2019 is 31st August 2016.

Companies exporting hazardous waste for disposal may be committing a criminal offence if they don’t inform DEFA.
