Major fire on container ship CCNI Arauco

Mega container ship CCNI Arauco caught fire September 1st after an explosion in a container at the aft of the ship at Hamburg dock. The container exploded during welding work, causing thick smoke to covered the vessel and container terminal. More than 150 firefighters were fighting the blaze, with fighting boats and tugs attacking the flames from the Elbe, assisting landside trucks fighting the flames from portside. There is no declared hazardous cargo on the ship, but the local fire department said that temperatures had reached more than 800 degrees, which could tear apart the fabric of the container ship. The 9,000-teu CCNI Arauco is 300 metres long, 112,588 DWT and 95,138 GRT. It was built in 2015. It is owned by NSC Holding and the operator is CCNI.
