A joint operation involving US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) and other US enforcement authorities seized about 3,200 lb of cocaine in what was described as the largest illicit drugs seizure at the port since 1994.
USCBP said the drugs* were found inside a shipping container entering the US on board a ship arriving from South America on February 28th. An investigation found 60 packages containing a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine.
The agency did not reveal the identity of the ship.
The joint operation involved USCBP, the USCG, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York Police Department and the New York State Police.
CBP officers turned over the illicit drugs to agents from HSI.
*IMN does not quote “street value” numbers supplied by enforcement organizations as these bear little relationship to the financial reality of the drugs transaction.
