Iran Guards seize foreign ship in Gulf for smuggling diesel

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have seized an unnamed foreign vessel in the Gulf, claiming that it was responsible for smuggling 757,000 litres of diesel out of the country, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday September 10th.

Iran’s government heavily subsidizes domestic fuel, making the smuggling route between Iran and Iraq (and other neighbouring countries) exceedingly attractive. The fall in the value of the Iranian currency has increased the price differential.

The Iranian Guards have detained several ships in the past few months for smuggling fuel in the Gulf.
