Fire in car carrier west of Brest

A fire was reported to have broken out in the engine room of vehicles carrier RCC Passion (IMO 9453107) during the late afternoon of Sunday December 1st, some 40nm west-north-west of the French island of Ushant Island, at the south-western end of the English Channel. There are 2,195 cars on board.

A firefighting team was transferred on board by helicopter while the 19 crew fought the fire with on board facilities. At around midnight the vessel was approached by SAR ship Abeille Bourbon. By 06:00 the following morning the vessel was apparently being towed by Abeille Bourbon, destination unknown. The fire had been extinguished and the crew were trying to restart the engine. The engine room was reported yesterday morning still to be full of smoke and fumes, which would need to be ventilated before any repairs could be executed. None of the crew was reported hurt. No AIS was being transmitted. The vessel had been en route from Le Havre to Fort-de-France, Martinique.

2011-built, Bahamas-flagged, 36,384 gt RCC Passion is owned by Passion Ray :td care pf manager Ray Car Carriers Ltd, Douglas, Isle of Man. ISM manager is Stamco Ship Management Co Ltd of Piraeus, Greece. It is entered with North of England on behalf of Passion Ray Ltd.
