Bulk carrier found beached in Taiwan

A derelict bulk carrier was found beached on the northern coast of Xijiyu Island, South Penghu Marine National Park, Taiwan, Taiwan Strait, during the morning of January 18th. No-one appeared to be on board.

The ship was boarded by the Penghu Marine Patrol team and was conditionally identified as being the HM Foundation (IMO 9012379). Its last AIS position was from December 31st 2020 when it was in the Sulu sea.

It was hypothesized that the vessel either broke away from anchorage somewhere, having put into a cold lay-up, or was under tow to be scrapped and broke off its towage.

1991-built, Philippines-flagged, 4,291 gt HM Foundation is owned and managed by Hua Ming Shipping Group of Zambales, Philippines.
