VLCC Brightoil Gem (IMO 9602655) has been arrested by China’s Haikou Maritime Court at the request of the vessel owner’s creditor bank, BNP Paribas. The bank filed to Haikou Maritime Court for detention of the tanker in January after an alleged failure to repay loans of $40m. Haikou Maritime Court approved the bank’s application and seized the ship. Brightoil Gem is 319 metres in length and 60 metres in depth, and is valued at about $60m. It would appear to be the largest and most valuable ship that Haikou Maritime Court has ever ordered to be detained. Haikou Maritime Court will open a court session for the case on March 26th. Two of the tankers owned by Hong Kong-based Brightoil, the Brightoil Lion and the Brightoil Glory, were detained at the end of 2018.
