Cargo ship YM Efficiency (IMO 9353280), which lost about 83 shipping containers, with 30 more suffering damage, after the vessel encountered 5-metre waves and strong winds 30km off the coast of Port Stephens on Friday June 1st, has docked in Sydney. Hundreds of workers continue to clean up debris that has washed up on the coast of New South Wales.
Aerial footage of the YM Efficiency, which docked in Port Botany during the morning of Wednesday June 6th, showed containers hanging over the side of the ship and tilted at angles. Some appeared almost completely crushed. Executive director of Roads and Maritime Services Angus Mitchell said that “in these 83 containers, there is just about everything that gets imported into this country. We’ve had chips, lollies, whitegoods, kitchen cabinets, even whole kitchen suites in these containers”.
