Cutting of capsized car carrier Golden Ray (IMO 9775816) in the St. Simon’s Sound was halted after the Unified Command (UC) activated its Heavy Weather Plan in advance of Hurricane Eta approaching on November 11th.
The heavy lift crane vessel VB 10000 paused cutting operations part of the way through the first cut, and was secured. Sections of floating boom vulnerable to severe weather were removed.
The pause was not unexpected in that the UC had warned that there could be interruptions because of bad weather, given the time of year that the operation commenced.
Golden Ray capsized in September last year off the port of Brunswick, Georgia, leading to the highest pool claim of the year and, at in excess of $400m, in the top five ever, dwarfed only by the $1bn-plus Costa Concordia disaster in January 2012.
