US Navy warns mariners in Gulf of Aden to keep their distance

In an alert that was clearly aimed at Iran, without actually mentioning the country, Iran, the US Navy on Tuesday May 19th issued a warning to mariners in the Gulf to stay 100 metres away from US warships or risk being “interpreted as a threat and subject to lawful defensive measures”.

In April President Donald Trump’s threatened to fire on any Iranian ships that harassed US Navy vessels. The Pentagon said that the President’s threat was meant to emphasize the Navy’s right to defend itself.

Bahrain-based US Naval Forces Central Command said the notice was “designed to enhance safety, minimize ambiguity and reduce the risk of miscalculation.”

In April 11 Iranian vessels came close to US Navy and Coast Guard ships in the Gulf, The US Navy called it “dangerous and provocative” behaviour.
