UK P&I Club and commercial aviation training operation CAE have launched a safety book aimed at mariners on transferable lessons from the flight deck.
Entitled ‘Maritime Team Dynamics’, the event launch occurred during London International Shipping Week 2021.
The event, hosted by the UK P&I Club chief executive Andrew Taylor, saw an introduction by the Club’s Loss Prevention Director Stuart Edmonston and an aviation safety presentation by Captain David Owens of CAE.
UK Club said that it had been working with CAE since 2019 on an interactive maritime crew management (MCRM) course that would bring aviation and maritime together to provide Members with invaluable human factor learning and instruction.
The book, Maritime Team Dynamics – Lessons from the Flight Deck, was published by Witherbys, and consists of 12 aviation incidents cross-referenced to the maritime sector, highlighting important, relatable, and relevant lessons from the flight deck. The aviation case studies illustrated the similarities that exist across each industry when it comes to major incidents, focusing on the key human element present in the MCRM training modules.
Stuart Edmonston, Loss Prevention Director, UK P&I Club, said that “there are clear similarities between the maritime and aviation environments that we can share experiences. We believe this exceptionally well presented publication is a valuable resource for seafarers of all ranks as these real life incidents and comparisons demonstrate the importance of effective teamwork in maintaining safety onboard ship.”
