UK Department of Transport launches Maritime Safety Action Plan

The UK Department of Transport has launched a Maritime Safety Action plan The campaign, targeting recreational boaters, is part of the first Maritime Safety Action plan, which sets ambitious targets for reducing and eliminating preventable deaths.

The government will be holding a consultation later this year on the safety of personal watercraft – such as jet skis.

Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani hoped that the plan would help cut preventable fishing deaths by 2027 and half drowning by 2026.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has pledged to carry out a review of its decision-making to ensure it follows recommendations set out by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

The plan comes as one of the first actions from Maritime 2050, which was published in January and is the government’s long-term strategy to keep the UK as a world leader in the sector.
