Two attempted pirate attacks late last week

An attack was reported last Thursday March 21st on Liberian registered tanker Yamilah-III (IMO 9487263) when it was about 109nm south of Yemen’s Nishtun. UK-based security firm Ambrey reported that the vessel, which is managed by a UAE-based company, came under fire from a skiff carrying four armed individuals. Armed guards onboard the Yamilah III returned fire, which enabled the vessel to evade the skiff unharmed. The UKMTO confirmed the incident the same day, without naming the vessel.

On Wednesday a similar incident occurred when bulk carrier New Leonidas (IMO 9260641) encountered a small boat while sailing 160nm southeast of Salalah, Oman. The vessel observed armed individuals aboard the boat, along with a ladder. Upon the boat’s approach, armed guards onboard the New Leonidas fired warning shots, forcing the pirates to retreat.
