Dutch naval forces intercepted a Tanzania-flagged merchant vessel in the Caribbean that was carrying 1,600 kilos of cocaine. The suspected vessel was first spotted on December 25th 2017 by an NH-90 helicopter, deployed with the Dutch naval vessel Zr. Ms. Van Speijk. It was boarded by the US Coast Guard the following day. The cargo was only discovered after the ship was escorted to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where a second search was undertaken by the USCG law enforcement detachment .
The 1,600 kilos of cocaine was hidden in a space between the fuel tanks and was found on December 31st 2017. The vessel, the illegal cargo and its crew were was transferred to the relevant authorities in Dominican Republic.
