Small Korean products tanker capsizes off Japan

South Korean-flagged chemical/oil products tanker Keoyoung Sun (IMO 9146924) capsized off the coast of Yamaguchi prefecture in western Japan on March 19th, with operations to rescue the crew underway, public broadcaster NHK reported on Wednesday, citing the Japanese Coast Guard.

The tanker requested assistance after 07:00 local time. reporting that the vessel was tilting over, and that there were 11 crew onboard, with seven deaths confirmed. Nine seafarers had so far been retrieved, with the search for the remaining two continuing, NHK reported.

1996-built, South Korea-flagged, 870 gt Keoyoung Sun is owned and managed by Keoyoung Shipping Co of Busan, South Korea. As of March 19th the vessel was underway off Hirohata. It is entered with Korea P&I Club on behalf of Keo Young Shipping Co Ltd.
