Six pirates captured by EUNAVFOR ship

A European Union naval force warship has captured six suspected pirates following alleged attacks on a containership and a fishing vessel off the coast of Somalia last week. The six suspected pirates were captured aboard their whaler by the crew of the Italian vessel ITS Virginio Fasan, the flagship of EU NAVFOR Somalia. The whaler was believed to have been used as a mother ship for piracy attacks on a 52,000-tonne container ship and a fishing vessel on November 17th and 18th in the Southern Somali basin.

Several rocket-propelled grenades were fired towards the ITS Virginio Fasan but all crew were reported safe and no damage was reported.

The containership in the incident was confirmed as Panama-flagged MV Ever Dynamic (IMO 9142198), which was travelling from Colombo to Mombasa. The fishing vessel was confirmed as Seychelles-flagged Galerna III.

Panama-flagged, 1998-built, 52,090 gt Ever Dynamic is owned by Greencompass Marine SA care of Evergreen Marine (Taiwan). It is entered with Assuranceforeningen Gard – gjensidig – on behalf of Greencompass marine SA.
