Serbia has acceded to the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC), meaning that 74 countries have now signed up.
The IMO said the signatories represented more than 75% of the world’s merchant fleet tonnage.
Under the treaty, ships are required to manage their ballast water, in a way that will control the spread of dangerous microbes from one geographical region to another. Vesna Vercon Ivic, Consul, Serbia Embassy to the UK, met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at IMO Headquarters in London on July 26th to deposit the instrument of accession.
