Search warrants issued on Truth Aquatics after Conception fire and sinking

The US Coast Guard Investigative Service has served search warrants on Truth Aquatics, the owner of sunken dive boat Conception, as part of an ongoing investigation. The Coast Guard was assisted by US federal investigation operation ATF, which is investigating the fire, and the FBI.

Preliminary indications were that the victims’ cause of death was smoke inhalation and that the passengers died prior to being burned. One of the 34 victims either confirmed or presumed dead is still missing. On September 6th the sheriff’s office suspended salvage and recovery efforts because of winds and increased currents. Recovery efforts for the last missing person have also been suspended and will resume when weather conditions improve. Authorities hoped to resume operations on September 10th. The vessel has been secured underwater.
