Sam Ratulangi sinks

Container ship Sam Ratulangi (IMO 9151981) sank on October 3rd, six weeks after running aground while unmanned. After sinking, the wreck was resting on the bottom with a list to starboard side. Part of the accommodation block and the hull were still showing above the water.

After the failure by the Myanmar Navy to refloat Sam Ratulangi – which was abandoned by its towers in bad weather and subsequently ran aground on August 27th in the Gulf of Martaban – the navy reportedly hired another party to try to refloat the vessel. The ship had been sold to PT Mandara Putra Bajatama and then re-sold to be dismantled at a Bangladesh shipbreaking yard. 2001-built, 18,247 gt Sam Ratulangi is owned and managed by Talent Mile Ltd of Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
