Sailors return home after spending more than three years in jail in Libya

A special flight has brought home 14 Ukrainian crew members of chemical/oil products tanker Ruta (IMO 8711899) after they had spent more than three years in a Libyan prison.

In April 2017 the Ukrainian sailors were detained in Libya on charges of involvement in the smuggling of petroleum products.

Complex domestic political and security situation in Libya meant that the case took several years to pass through the Libyan courts.

Ukraine managed to achieve results in negotiations with the various Libyan counterparties and bring their citizens home.

1989-built, Ukraine-flagged, 1,901 gt Ruta is owned and managed by Manchester Shipping SA of Odessa, Ukraine.
