The Romanian government has approved a plan to upgrade the road infrastructure at the Black Sea port of Constanta. The move is part of a wide range of investments in the port that will enable it to take in more Ukrainian grain, which could have arrived by rail, road, barge along the Danube, or by sea from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.
Constanta has already become Ukraine’s largest alternative export route. Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest grain exporters, and Romanian government officials have said they aimed to double the monthly transit capacity of Ukrainian grain to Constanta to 4m tons “in the coming months”.
