Rhine reopens after rise in water levels forces closure

The Rhine river in Germany reopened to shipping yesterday after it was closed on Monday due to a rise in water levels following rain, the German inland navigation authority has said.

The river closed between the German cities of Duisburg and Koblenz, preventing sailings to and from Switzerland. The high water meant that vessels did not have enough space to sail under bridges that cross the waterway.

The river crested to its highest point late on Monday, after which drier weather caused water levels to fall.
