ReCAAP reports three attempted robberies in the Singapore Strait

There have been three attempted robberies in the Singapore Strait during the past week, reports ReCAAP ICS. It is once again issuing warnings about incidents occurring on vessels underway in the Singapore Strait.

The three latest boardings all took place in the eastbound lane of the Singapore Strait, in which 30 similar incidents were reported during 2020.

“The three incidents occurred in close proximity to each other and in particular, two incidents occurred within an interval of a few hours,” said ReCAAP in an alert. The first boarding took place on January 25th, the second late on January 28th and the third a few hours later shortly after midnight on January 29th.

During each of the events the perpetrators were sighted in the engine room but were scared off. Nothing was reported stolen and there was no direct confrontation between the crew and the boarders.

Bulk carrier Ark Royal (IMO 9219446) was underway on January 25th about 7nm northwest of Bintan, Indonesia. The crew was mustered and a search was conducted. The master later reported that nothing had been taken and that no assistance was required.

Bulk carrier Elvia (IMO 9570840) was boarded late on January 28th in the same general area, about 6nm northwest of Indonesia. The vessel was underway when 10 unauthorized individuals, in this case armed with knives, were sighted in the engine room. The alarm was raised. The ship was searched, with no additional sighting of the perpetrators. The master later reported that nothing had been stolen and the vessel was continuing on its route to China, not requiring assistance.

Four hours after this general cargo ship Vantage Wave (IMO 9506514), which was in the same area, reported that three people armed with knives had been sighted in the engine room. Once again the alarm was sounded, the ship was searched, without locating the boarders. Again, the captain reported that nothing was stolen and the ship was continuing on its voyage to China.
