Ports close in China as tropical storm Kompasu nears

Waiting time at Yantian port in Shenzhen, which has bumped up and down but generally above the long-term average ever since the Covid-19 pandemic started, increased again this week as tropical cyclone Kompasu approached.

Yantian port suspended pick-up and drop-off of containers as Kompasu approached China’s southern coast. The number of ships waiting outside the port rose to 67, the most since August 26th, according to shipping data compiled by Bloomberg.

Yantian had a cargo throughput of 13.34m TEUs in 2020 and typically serves about 100 ships a week.
