Pirates board container ship in Ecuador

Containership Maersk Newbury (IMO 9231470) was boarded by pirates during October 2nd while transiting under pilot on the Guayaquil River in Ecuador.

The master alerted the local authorities when he spotted the unauthorized persons on board. The robbers assaulted  one of the crew members. The crew managed to escape and hid in the forecastle store.

After the robbers realized that they had been discovered, they left the ship.

The Ecuador Coast Guard (ECG) conducted a search but found no unauthorized person on board. The injured crewmember was given first-aid treatment, and the ship resumed her voyage.

2001-built, Singapore-flagged, 26,582 gt Maersk Newbury is owned by Moller Singapore AS Pte Ltd of Singapore. It is managed by Maersk Line AS of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is entered with Britannia Club on behalf of Maersk Line AS.
