Philippines responds to fire on vessel

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Station Basilan responded to a fire onboard ML J Dayang 3 with 15 crew members onboard. The incident occurred in waters off Lampinigan Island, Isabela City, Basilan at around 02:30 local time on December 7th.

The motor launch had departed from Cawit, Zamboanga City, heading for Bongao, Tawi-tawi loaded with hardware materials and groceries. While underway a short-circuit occurred that led to the fire onboard.

Together with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Bureau of Fire Protection in Isabela City, the PCG launched firefighting and search and rescue operations.

The 15 crew members were rescued unharmed.

The BFP Basilan City declared the fire extinguished at around 05:30 local time the same morning.

The Marine Environmental Protection Group (Basilan) and PCG Station Basilan inspected the vicinity waters for possible traces of oil spills, but no pollution was detected. The BFP Basilan City estimated the damage to property at a  cost of Php13.5m ($268,000).
