Philippines’ crew numbers drop

The number of Philippines-based seafarers fell by 25% last year to 337,502, according to data from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

The Philippines has been the world’s leading supplier of crew since 2000, but it is now coming under severe pressure with India, Indonesia and Bangladesh the nations moving to fill the gap.

The Philippines’ competitiveness has eroded down to cheaper alternatives, an increase in red tape and am alleged decline in training and skills standards. That has put its accreditation by the European Maritime Safety Agency at risk.
