Oman’s ports to receive more livestock this month

The ports in Oman are expected to receive between 32,000 and 37,000 heads of live animal imports as a result of contracts in force. Suleiman bin Mohammed Al Salmi, Director-General of Livestock at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, said that the Sultanate had already received enough sheep and cattle from different parts of the world, including Australia, Sudan, South Africa and Somalia.

The movement of live animals by cargo ship has been a matter of increasing controversy in several countries, including Australia, with animal rights groups claiming that the animals suffer physical and mental hardship on their journey.
