Oil tanker worker died after falling from boat off Teesside coast, says coroner

Oil tanker worker Gerald Dimzon was on a ladder when he fell into the North sea four miles from the coast of Hartlepool on September 26th 2022 whilst moving from an oil tanker, a coroner has determined.

The 55-year-old man fell while was descending a ladder from the oil tanker that he worked on, heading for a transfer vessel. Mr Dimzon, who was from the Philippines, was rescued from the water by his fellow crew members who performed casualty care until the emergency services arrived. However, he was pronounced dead a short time afterwards.

Hartlepool’s all-weather RNLI lifeboat attended the incident , with homicide detectives and a major enquiry team from Cleveland Police launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Dimzon’s death shortly after his fall.

A hearing to determine the circumstances of Mr Dimzon’s death was heard at Teesside Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, November 14th . A post mortem examination ruled that Mr Dimzon died from “immersion in water”. Assistant coroner Karin Welsh ruled the death an accident.
