Oil spill from Petrobas pipe

More than 60,000 litres of oil spilt from A Petrobras pipe after a theft attempt in Rio de Janeiro’s Guanabara Bay over the weekend, Reuters reports. The pipeline was owned by a subsidiary of state-run Petroleo Brasileiro SA. Unit Transpetro said oil had spilled into a river feeding Guanabara Bay and that so far the company had managed to clean up over half of the oil.

“It was a leak of significant proportions, with an impact on the mangroves,” said Maurício Muniz, an analyst at the Instituto Chico Mendes, which is associated with Brazil’s environment ministry.

Transpetro and Petrobras, as Petroleo Brasileiro is commonly known, have become frequent targets of theft in recent years.
