North Korea says US seizure of bulk carrier “illegal”

North Korea has said that the US seizure of bulk carrier Wise Honest (IMO 8805490) by the United States was an illegal act that violated the spirit of a summit pact between the two countries’ leaders. It demanded the return of the vessel without delay.

In a statement on Tuesday May 14th, the North Korean foreign ministry said that it did not recognize the UN Security Council resolutions which the US had used as a reason for seizing the vessel. It called the US act a violation of its sovereignty.

The US Justice Department said last week that it had seized the North Korean vessel because it was involved in illicit coal shipments in violation of sanctions. It was first detained by Indonesia in April 2018.

U.S. Justice Department officials said the Wise Honest was being impounded to American Samoa.

1989-built, North Korea-flagged, 17,061 gt Wise Honest is owned and managed by Korea Songi Shipping Co of Pyongyang, North Korea.
