The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has petitioned the Nigerian Minister of Transport over the activities of some shipping companies, consignees and agents which the MWUN considered anti-worker and inimical to the nation’s economy.
The MWUN urged transport minister Rotimi Ameachi to intervene to prevent nationwide industrial unrest.
The union claims that some shipping companies have berthed without submitting their manifests to the Stevedoring Contractors for billing or allowing all the statutory bodies to board the vessels for inspection.
MWUN alleges that some highly placed officials in the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) colluded in this for personal gain. It cited as the latest example of abuse the M.V. Eide and M.V. Hawk Vessels, which berthed on Monday July 5, 2016 at Chevron EGPL jetty.
“We believe that there is somebody somewhere in Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) who is aiding and abetting these Consignees/ Agents and this must be investigated”, the petition read.
