A total of 198 containers have been declared a total loss due to fire that broke out on container vessel Yantian Express (IMO 9229831) on January 3rd while she was in the North Atlantic, several hundred miles from her original destination of Halifax, Nova Scotia, en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The vessel was subsequently taken to Freeport, Bahamas, for unloading.
A further 460 containers in the affected area were or might be damaged and required inspection.
The goods in the 198 destroyed containers will not be inspected and will be sent for destruction after they are unloaded from the vessel.
Inspections of the damaged 460 containers will take place in Freeport, but Salvage expert Richards Hogg Lindley said that it was not known at the moment when the investigations could begin.
Preparations were reported have been made in association with the local authorities, salespersons and other interested parties to remove all the containers in the foreship of the vessel, but work was unlikely to begin until the end of this week.
