MSC Grandiosa crashes into pier as it comes in to dock in Italy

New cruise ship MSC Grandiosa (IMO 9803613) allided with a pier in the port of Palermo, Sicily, during the morning of December 30th while manoeuvring in port while mooring. No injuries were reported. The extent of the damage appeared minor.

The port side stern suffered cosmetic damage above the waterline with dents and scratches. More damage appeared to have been suffered by the pier

MSC GRANDIOSA, valued at around $800m, only set sail on its maiden voyage last month. The ship initially appeared to be in position, but instead of stopping, the vessel continued to turn until the rear of the ship scraped across the wall of the dock.

The ship later docked without incident.

2019-built, Malta-flagged, 181,541 gt MSC Grandiosa is owned by Vista 3 Compania Naviera SA care of manager MSC Crociere SpA of Naples, Italy. ISM manager is MSC Cruise Management UK Ltd of Uxbridge, UK. It is entered with Steamship Mutual (European syndicate) on behalf of Compania Naviera Vista 3 SA.
