Massive fire hits Marbella yacht storage facility

A huge fire looked to have badly damaged a marine storage facility in the Spanish city of Marbella during the evening of January 11th. Unconfirmed local reports said that up to 80 boats could have been lost, none of them more than 13 metres in length.

The storage facility at La Bajadilla fishing port was hit by the fire at around 19:00 local time on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Marbella Town Hall said on Wednesday night that around 30 firefighters were working on extinguishing the fire at a marine warehouse. The facility, which belongs to Marina Marbella, is used for boat storage and repairs.

It was thought likely that many of the vessels belonged to UK-based or UK-national owners.

Marina Marbella was founded by two Swedish sailors and also operates in countries including the UK and Morocco. It offers a range of yacht maintenance services. These included dry docking, cleaning and storing over winter.

The fire was brought under control at around 21:00 local time.
