Marine round-up : 19th March 2024

WK Webster said last week that it had received reports that general cargo ship Albiz (IMO 9397652) ran aground during berthing manoeuvres at Ribadeo port, Spain, on March 14th. It was reported that two tugs were deployed to assist to refloat the vessel.

2008-built, Spain-flagged, 3,995 gt Albiz is owned and managed by Naviera Murueta SA of Bilbao, Spain. It is entered with Gard on behalf of Naviera Murueta SA. As of March 14th the vessel had been underway from Huelva, Spain, to Castropol, Spain, ETA March 15th.

The arrival of cargo ship YM Witness (IMO 9704609) at the private container port Evyaport in Kocaeli did not progress smoothly. It had arrived during the afternoon of March 16th, en route from Ashdod, Israel. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the vessel was unable to stop while manoeuvring and as a result knocked over three of the four large container cranes at the port. The operator of one of the cranes was seriously injured. The vessel had a pilot aboard, but it approached the dock at a sharp angle, and was unable to stop in time. Several containers were also knocked from the vessel into the port waters when the gantries collapsed onto its deck.

2015-built, Hong Kong-flagged, 145,324 gt YM Witness is owned by Seaspan Holdco LVIII Ltd care of Seaspan Ship Management Ltd of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is entered with NorthStandard on behalf of Seaspan Holdco LVIII Ltd. As of March 18th the vessel was at anchor at Evyap, Turkiye.

The Welsh police boarded bulk carrier Frontier Asuka (IMO 9675640), which was docked in Port Talbot, on March 15th. There were concerns about a person’s welfare. South Wales Police reportedly sent specialist teams to the ship. It was believed that both police and border force officials attended the scene after the alarm was raised. The condition of the person of concern on board was not known. There were no wider public safety concerns and the ship was not in danger.

2014-built, Panama-flagged, 92,752 gt Frontier Alaska is owned by Fair Wind Navigation SA care of Mizuho Sangyo Co ltd of Imabari, Japan. As of March 18th it was moored at port Talbot, UK.

Buoy / lighthouse vessel Alder (IMO 9271145) accidentally discharged about 500 gallons of diesel fuel on March 15th when it was 30 miles offshore of Fort Bragg, California. The buoy tender was on its way to Humboldt Bay. USCG officials were investigating and evaluating potential impacts to sensitive sites. However, the USCG said that it did not expect the shoreline to be affected.

2004-built, USA-flagged, 1,930 gt Alder is owned and managed by the US Coast Guard. As of March 18th it was underway north of San Francisco.
