Marine round-up : 13th September 2024

Several containers spilled into the Nieuwe Maas River in Rotterdam during the morning of September 11th after the containers making up the top stack on an inland motor freighter, the Nijmegen Max, hit the Willemsburg Bridge. Five containers in total fell into the river. The bridge was understood to have sustained some damage as a result of the incident. No injuries were reported. The containers drifted in the water and moved toward the Van Brienenoordbrug bridge, posing a collision risk to other vessels. Four containers were recovered from the river, while one container that had sunk was later found at the riverbed, the Port of Rotterdam Authority said.

The Nijmegen Max was later reported to be at Alblasserdam Port, Netherlands.
