Marine round-up : 13th December 2023

Richard Tomlin, the former Atrium marine underwriter accused by Lloyd’s of bullying and discrimination as “Employee A”, has won his misconduct appeal against the Corporation, reports The Insurer, citing unnamed sources.

Container ship Aurora (IMO 9234989) suffered a propulsion failure during the evening of December 11th and went adrift 35nm west of Ushant, while en route from Southampton to Montoir port, France. A salvage contract was signed with Abeilles International and salvage tug Abeille Bourbon (IMO 9308687) was despatched to tow the disabled ship to Brest. Towage commenced at around 21:30 UTC on December 11th.

2001-built, Antigua & Barbuda-flagged, 9,981 gt Aurora is owed by Aurora GmbH & Co KG care of manager TAS Transatlantische GmbH of Haren (Ems) Germany. It is entered with NorthStandard on behalf of Noord Nederlandsche P&I Club. As of December 12th it was listed as Not Under Command in the Bay of Biscay.

Ro-ro cargo ship Eurocargo Malta (IMO 9465514) was reported to have lost four semi-trailers overboard on December 2nd in the Ligurian Sea in waters between Corsica and Italian coast, near Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary (known as the Pelagos Sanctuary). One of the trailers was said to have been carrying sulphuric acid. All four semi-trailers were lost in a position where the depth was 900 metres. No traces of trailers found so far, and no signs of possible acid leak and/or pollution. An investigation into the circumstances of the accident was ongoing.

2010-built, Italy-flagged, 32,841 gt Eurocargo Malta is owned and ISM-managed by Grimaldi Euromed Spa of Naples, Italy. Manager is Grimaldi Group SpA of the same address. It is entered with NorthStandard on behalf of Grimaldi Euromed SpA. As of December 12th it was underway off the coast of Italy in the Ligurian Sea, en route from Livorno, Italy, to Catania, Italy, ETA November 13th.

Efforts to salvage cargo ship FR Pearl (IMO 9224128), which drifted aground in Eastern Turkiye during the storm on November 27th off the coast of Hopa district of Artvin, were continuing, 13 days after the grounding. While the ship was being replenished with fuel, the repair process continued.

2000-built, Palau-flagged, 3,580 gt FR Pearl is owned by FR Pearl Shipping & Trading Co care of manager Esenyali Gemi of Istanbul, Turkiye. Last record is from November 26th when the vessel was in the Black Sea off Poti, Georgia.
