Marine accident round-up : 8th September 2023

A fire erupted in the aft section of ferry KMP Mutiara Berkah I while it was berthed at Merak port, west Java, Sunda Strait, at around 10:50 local time on September 6th. The fire was thought to have broken out on the cargo deck. Thick black smoke could be seen emanating from the inside. All of the passengers were reported to have disembarked safely, without any injuries. A number of shoreside fire engines attended. Tugs with water cannons attacked the fire from the sea.

The status of the vessel is curious. MarineTraffic gives its official name as Hyundai MIPO 0340 and its function as a products tanker. But the accpompanying photograph is clearly a ferry. The listed IMO number doesn’t show up anywhere on Equasis (and neither does the name). There is also no Hyundau MIIPO 0340. The one consistency is that all the names and IMOs are connected to Indonesia and are Indonesian-flagged.
