Marine accident round-up : 31st March 2020

The first 36-inch diameter high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating pipe barrier segment has been installed around the wreck of capsized car carrier Golden Ray (IMO 9775816). The foam-filled HDPE pipe is one of 36 segments in total. It will float on the water surface between steel buoys constrained by the structural framing at each pile group. The HDPE barrier will secure and protect a floating offshore oil boom that will be installed outside of the pipe and will completely surround the wreck site. Around 6,000 tons of aggregate rock was placed around the ship’s hull to reduce erosion in October 2019.

The Coast Guard of Ortona medevaced an injured crew member from cable layer Seminole (IMO 7645550) on March, 29th. The cable layer was at anchor in the bay two miles off the port due to the general shutdown. At 08:30 the captain contacted the port authority and reported that a 47 year old Indonesian crew member had suffered injuries to his left leg during works on board. A patrol boat brought him to port, from where he was transported to a nearby hospital. 1975-built, Italy-flagged, 13,871 gt Seminole is owned and managed by Micoperi SA of Ravenna, Italy. It is entered with Gard AS on behalf of Micoperi SpA.

A conveyor belt caught fire while loading barley onto bulk carrier Thalassini (IMO 9286592) in the port of Bristol, UK, during the evening of March 28th. The ship was berthed at the Royal Portbury Dock. The fire was tackled by crews from Temple, Avonmouth, Pill and Portishead. The Avon Fire and Rescue Service and Svitzer tug crews also attended. On-board firefighters and tugs tackled the fire in a multi-agency approach to the incident. There were no casualties.

2005-built, Malta-flagged, 42,887 gt Thalassini is owned by Argo Shiptrade SA care of Astra Shipmanagement Inc of Athens, Greece. It is entered with Standard Club (European Division) on behalf of Argo Shiptrade SA.

The removal of oil from stricken cargo ship Stellar Banner (IMO 9726803) was completed by March 27th. About 3,900m³ of fuel oil were transferred. There were no traces of pollution. The agencies and companies involved remained in close coordination with the Maritime Authority in order to remove the ship as soon as possible.

2016-built, Marshall Islands-flagged, 151,596 gt Stellar Banner is owned by VP-12 Shipping Inc care of manager Polaris Shipping Co Ltd of Seoul, South Korea. It is entered with Britannia on behalf of VP-12 Shipping Inc.

Cement carrier Ryosei Maru (IMO 9132832) was hit by chemical/oil products tanker Kosei Maru (IMO 9428140) during the morning of March 26th in the port of Kanda, Japan. The latter was leaving the port, en route to Onoda, while the Ryosei Maru was berthed for repairs.

1995-built, Japan-flagged, 749 gt Ryosei Maru is owned and managed by Kirishima Kaiun Shokai KK of Fukuoka, Japan.

2007-built, Japan-flagged, 749 gt Kosei Maru is owned by Japan Railway/Tabuchi Kaiun care of manager Tabuchi Kaiun Co Ltd of Osaka, Japan.
