Marine accident round-up : 2nd December 2021

Salvage operations resumed on sunken vessel Fardin-1 have nine days after the vessel sank on the River Pasur near Mongla Port following a collision with the Handy Perth (IMO 9628128) during the evening of November 15th (IMN November 17th) . A Narayanganj-based 15-member rescue and diving team from Bhai Bhai Salvage started removing coal from the sunken ship during the morning of November 24th. The wreck will be raised only after all the coal has been extracted. The lightering work was complicated by the silt deposition and a large amount of coal inside the ship. Two crew members remain missing, presumed dead. Three dead bodies have been recovered so far.

2013-built, Panama-flagged 23,495 gt Handy Perth is owned and managed by Nation SA of Athens, Greece. It is entered with UK Club on behalf of Nation SA.

A fire broke out in the engine room of general cargo ship T-Mare (IMO 9007001) at Torgem Shipyard, Tuzla, Turkey on November 26th. The ship was berthed there for repair and maintenance. The fire brigade of the shipyard was quickly on the scene. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Fire Brigade Department arrived later. The fire was brought under control and cooling works on the ship continued.

1994-built, Panama-flagged, 3,978 gt T-Mare is owned by Mare International Corp care of manager Majoris Trading Ltd of Istanbul, Turkey.

A 22-year-old woman from Indonesia was medevaced from cruise ship Mein Schiff 4 (IMO 9678408) while it was sailing 135nm south of Madeira on November 29th. The passenger was complaining of severe abdominal pain. The Portuguese Navy, through MRCC Lisbon, coordinated the rescue operation, with a Portuguese Air Force aircraft heading to the vessel. The passenger was hoisted safely from the ship and taken to the Dr Nélio Mendonça hospital, where she was admitted to the Emergency Service.

2015-built, Malta-flagged, 99,526 gt Mein Schiff 4 is owned and managed by TUI Cruises GmbH of Hamburg, Germany. ISM manager is Celebrity Cruises Inc of Miami, Florida. It is entered with UK Club on behalf of TUI Cruises GmbH.

A sailor on board crude oil tanker Afroditi (IMO 9452880) suffered an injury that necessitated medical treatment on November 28th while the vessel was in the sea area of Chios. The Isidoris F was deployed from the port of Chios to medevac the victim and transported him to the port, from where he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to the General Hospital of Chios for treatment.

2011-built, Liberia-flagged, 84,716 gt Afroditi is owned by Afroditi Navigation Inc care of manager Liquimar Tankers Management Inc of Athens, Greece. It is entered with Gard P&I on behalf of Afroditi Navigation Inc.

Fishing boat Valery Maslakov (IMO 9231391) suffered a loss of speed in the Kuril Strait on November 27th while it was between the islands of Shumshu and Paramushir. The loss of speed was due to a problem with the propeller, which may have got entangled with the fishing gear. During start of the main engine, vibrations of the rudder group were detected. Rescue vessel Suvorovets approached the trawler. Divers from the Suvorovets were still waiting for an improvement of the weather so that they could render assistance.
