Marine accident round-up : 28th November 2023

Bulk carrier Barbro G (IMO 9546796) ran aground in the Detroit River between downtown Detroit and Belle island in the early morning of November 27th. The vessel appeared to have anchored by then drifted aground, perhaps while leaving anchorage. The vessel was listed as en route from Sault Ste Marie, Canada, to Gibraltar, with 21,000 tons of wheat on board. By the mid-morning of November 27th local time a tug was present. There were no reports on damages, leaks.

2010-built, Portugal-flagged, 20,535 gt Barbro G is owned by Olof Brodin Bulkchart AB care of manager Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler of Hamburg, Germany. ISM manager is Thome Shipmanagement Company of Hamburg, Germany. It is entered with Gard P&I on behalf of Olof Brodin (Bulkchart) AB. Gard AS is claims leader for Hull and Loss of Hire on behalf of Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reedere. As of November 27th the vessel was reported as at anchor in Lake St Claire.

General cargo ship BBC Georgia (IMO 9357224) ran aground in the St Lawrence River, eastern Canada, late on November 23rd local time when the vessel was upstream from Portneuf, sailing upstream from Phu My, Vietnam, to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Great Lakes & Seaway Shipping reported water ingress and a flooded engine room.

2008-built, Antigua & Barbuda-flagged, 9,625 gt BBC Georgia is owned by 4 Leda Beteiligungs GmbH & Co of Emden Ostfriesland, Germany. It is entered with Skuld (Skuld Hamburg) on behalf of Delft Schiffahrt GmbH & Co KG. As of November 26th it was listed as Stopped on the St Lawrence River.

Container ship MSC Sofia Celeste (IMO 9702091) suffered an engine failure during the early evening of November 23rd in Outer Weser, Germany, having departed Bremerhaven a short time before. The vessel emergency anchored in the fairway between buoys 43 and 44 amid winds husting to 100kmh. Four tugs assisted the disabled ship, which looked to have been towed that evening and to have resumed sailing under its own power before dawn on November 24th. By later that morning it berthed safely in Hamburg.

2015-built, Portugal-flagged, 96,331 gt MSC Sofia Celeste is owned by City Horizon Enterprises Ltd care of manager MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co of Geneva, Switzerland. ISM manager is MSC Shipmanagement Ltd in Limassol, Cyprus. It is entered with NorthStandard on behalf of City Horizon Enterprises Ltd. As of November 26th the vessel was underway from Hamburg to Antwerp, ETA November 27th.

General cargo ship Rahima (IMO 9072989), which had been arrested at the Maldivian Civil Court in the Maldives on June 12th, was released by Maldives Port on November 6th, the vessel’s Chennai-based Indian owner has confirmed.

Still listed on Equasis as the Puravalan 1, the 1993-built, Palau-flagged 292 gt vessel is owned by Puravalan Freight Forwarders care of manager Portside Agency Pvt Ltd of Male, Maldives. As of November 26th the vessel was at anchor at Tuticorin, India.

General cargo vessel Otagawa (IMO 9599212) collided with the stern of container ship Kuo Lin (IMO 9796511) while the latter was drifting about seven miles from the port of Shimizu on November 21st at around 23:00 local time. No injuries were reported. The Otagawa berthed in Shimizu a couple of hours later, followed by the Kuo Lin some 90 minutes after that.

2010-built, Japan-flagged, 499 gt Otagawa is owned and managed by Suzuyo Kaiun KK. As of November 26th the vessel was underway from Nagoya, Japan, to Tokuyamakudamatsu, Japan, ETA November 27th.

2017-built, Bahamas-flagged, 18,826 gt Kuo Lin is owned by CNC Line Ltd HKG of Taipei City, Taiwan. It is managed by CMA CGM SA The French Line of Marseille, France. ISM manager is CMA CGM International Shipping of Singapore. It is entered with Gard P&I on behalf of CNC Line Ltd. As of November 26th the vessel was moored at Shimizu, Japan.
