Marine accident round-up : 26th June 2020

A search is underway to locate a crewmember who reportedly fell overboard from LPG carrier Hellas Gladiator (IMO 9732503) on June 25th, some 400 miles off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. An Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules aircraft was launched to search for the missing crewmember, along with two good Samaritan vessels which were notified via Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) messages. Hellas Gladiator is sailing from Freeport, Texas to Terneuzen, the Netherlands. 2016-built, Malta-flagged, 48,022 gt Hellas Gladiator is owned by Eastbourne Marine SA care of manager Latsco Marine Management Inc of Athens, Greece. It is entered with West of England Club (Claims Team Greece) on behalf of Eastbourne Marine SA.

Fishing vessel Panofi Frontier (IMO 8988806) was attacked 80 miles south of Lagos in the Gulf of Guinea during the afternoon of June 24th. The vessel was boarded by armed pirates, and the six crew members, among them five Koreans and one Ghanaian, were kidnapped. 1987-built, Ghana-flagged, 994 gt Panofi Frontier is owned and managed by Panofi Co Ltd of Tema, Ghana.

A crew member in his 40s from Hammerfest died after an accident on fishing vessel Leander (IMO 9581930) off Vardø during the morning of June 22nd. Police were notified of the incident. The vessel lay outside Hamningberg on the Varanger Peninsula for several hours, before heading for Vardø late in the evening of the same day. There were 10 crew members on board. 2010-built, Norway-flagged, 490 gt Leander is owned and managed by Oksnes Kysfiske AS of Myre, Norway.

Passenger/Cargo RoRo Musthika Kencana and passenger ship Wira Berlian (IMO 9875812) were in collision at Pier 2 of Merak Port, Indonesia, during the morning of June 23rd. The Wira Berlian was about to dock at Pier 3 when the collision occurred. The Musthika Kencana suffered damage on the port side when the stern of the other ferry hit. One window and the interior of the ship was damaged. Despite the damage, the process of loading and unloading passengers and vehicles continued.

Bulk carrier Star Centaurus (IMO 9594585) ran aground in Kali Limenes, Crete during the morning of June 22nd, while heading from Jorf Lasfar to Suez with 23 crew members on board. The ship was refloated by tug Pyrros and anchored safely in the bay of Kali Limenes, where an oil boom was laid out around the ship as a precautionary measure. The Port Authority of Limenes conducted a preliminary investigation and banned the ship from sailing until the presentation of a class maintenance certificate by the attending classification society. The ship was loaded with 57,000 tons of fertilizer. 2012-built, Marshall Islands-flagged, 32,987 gt Star Centaurus is owned by Sea 160 Leasing Co Ltd of Athens, Greece. It is managed by Technomar Shipping Inc-Lib of Athens, Greece. It is entered with Britannia on behalf of Sea 160 Leasing Co Ltd.
