Marine accident round-up : 25th October 2021

Container ship Zim Kingston (IMO 9389693) lost about 40 containers overboard on October 22nd when it was around 30nm off Vancouver island, understood at the time to have been approaching Juan de Fuca Strait en route from Busan, South Korea to Vancouver, British Columbia. At least two of lost containers were reported to contain combustible hazardous materials. There were also two crushed containers on cargo deck. The number of collapsed, destroyed or damaged containers on deck is unknown. The ship reached Victoria and was anchored on October 22nd.

2008-built, Malta-flagged, 40,030 gt Zim Kingston is owned by Balticsea Marine Inc care of manager Danaos Shipping Inc of Piraeus, Greece. It is entered with Swedish Club (Piraeus team) on behalf of Balticsea Marine Inc.

WE Cox reports the grounding of chemical/oil products tanker Orchid Kefalonia (IMO 9363821) en route from Barranquilla to Altamira and Houston. After local tugs were unable to refloat the vessel, T&T Salvage was contracted under LOF. Orchid Kefalonia has now been refloated and is currently at anchor off Barranquilla. Shipowners have also declared GA and Albatross Adjusters in Cyprus are appointed to collect securities.

2008-built, Marshall islands-flagged, 11,750 gt Orchid Kefalonia is owned by ASL Orchid Shipping Ltd care of manager Stolt Tankers BV of Rotterdam, Netherlands. ISM manager is Synergy Navis Marine Pvt Ltd of Maharashtra, India. It is entered with Steamship Mutual (European Syndicate) on behalf of ASL Orchid Shipping Ltd.

A crew member of hopper dredger Kaishuu (IMO 9226152) was seriously injured in an accident on October 20th and berthed at the Sea Bath Bridge in Cuxhaven Estmachen for a medevac after the master decided that the poor weather made it too risky to take him off on the Elbe. The fire brigade at Cuxhaven was alerted and assisted with a ladder to get the victim ashore for further transport to hospital. As of October 24th it was underway using engine at Brunsbüttel.

2002-built, Luxembourg-flagged, 17,370 gt Kaishuu is owned and managed by Toa Lux SA of Luxembourg. ISM manager is Dredging & Maritime Management of Capellen, Luxembourg. It is entered with Gard AS on behalf of Toa Lux SA.

Damage was found on October 20th on the port side shaft of passenger ship Flying Dolphin Erato (IMO 8861448) during cleaning works while the ship was moored inside the commercial port of Volos. The Central Port Authority of Volos banned the ship from sailing until the repair of the damage and the presentation of a certificate of class maintenance by the monitoring classification society. The passengers were forwarded with the care of the ship owner.
