Marine accident round-up : 19th October 2021

General cargo ship Fortune (IMO 9160944) was reported to have drifted aground during the afternoon of October 17th on the northern coast of Jibei island, Penghu Islands, Taiwan, in the Taiwan Strait, after suffering an engine failure earlier in the day. The vessel anchored but the anchor dragged and the ship drifted aground. The 14 crew were reported to have been evacuated by helicopter. However, as of October 18th the vessel was reported as underway, en route from Ningde Anchorage to Busan, South Korea, ETA October 19th.

1999-built, Panama-flagged, 4,476 gt Fortune is owned and managed by Far Prosperity Hong Kong Ltd of Hong Kong, China.

Iranian navy destroyer Alborz was reported by state TV on October 16th to have foiled a pirate attack against one of the country’s oil vessels in the Gulf of Aden following a “heavy exchange of fire”. The destroyer was said to have warded off “scores of pirates equipped with five speedboats and advanced equipment” that aimed to attack an unidentified Iranian oil vessel. The report said that the Alborz was deployed to international waters in August to maintain security for the country’s vessels.

Several packages and a bag with cocaine totalling 115kg were found hidden in a chain locker of bulk carrier Golden Calvus (IMO 9743174) by Customs at Rotterdam on October 15th. The carrier, with a cargo of coal, had arrived at Rotterdam from Colombia. It then left Rotterdam early on October 17th, bound for Amsterdam. There were no reports of any crew detentions. As of October 18th the vessel was moored in Amsterdam.

Bulk carrier HC Jana-Rosa (IMO 9509243) suffered an engine failure in the Dardanelles, Turkey, in the Cardak area during the morning of October 15th while transiting the Straits in a northern direction, en route from Trieste, Italy to Tekirdag, Marmara sea, Turkey, with an intended ETA of last Friday October 15th. The bulker was assisted by Straits Traffic Control tugs, and anchored at Sevketiye anchorage. As of 0130 UTC Oct 16, the ship was still at anchor.
