Marine accident round-up : 16th March 2020

Specialty (re)insurer Canopius has told all staff in the UK to work from home for at least two weeks as the carrier looks to mitigate any negative fallout from the coronavirus outbreak.

Morocco on Friday suspended all flights and passenger ship traffic to and from France, the state news agency said. Morocco earlier suspended trips with China, Italy and Algeria.

The refuelling of reefer boxship Baltic Spring (IMO 8909070) on March 10th caused an oil spill of some 10 to 12 sq/m in the Coal Harbour of St. Petersburg at the berth of the Baltic Shipbuilding Plant. Anti-pollution operation Professional Emergency Response Team (PASF) LLC Kontur SPb was mobilized and laid out oil booms, supported by a tug before the fuel was recovered by the SLV 12.

An appointed survey panel carried out a damage survey aboard cargo ship Stadt Dresden (IMO 9320049) on March 12th. The free fall rescue boat, safety connections and handrail units were found to be badly damaged. The poop deck side shell plating was holed, heavily damaged and needed a steel replacement in the frame of the repair. An underwater inspection was in progress in order to ascertain any damage on the propeller or rudder systems in the water.

Also aboard the İbrahim Şimşek (IMO 7504653), the other vessel involved in the collision on March 10th in Izmit Bay, Turkey, a damage survey was carried out. Various structural damages were noted at the foreship side shell plating together with anchor chains and windlasses. The crew of both was interrogated by the Harbour Master incident investigation desk. Both vessel’s departure permission has been cancelled until completion of permanent or temporary repairs and remained stationary at Yalova anchorage as of March 13th.
