Marine accident round-up : 15th March 2019

Chemical/oil products tanker Team Explorer (IMO 9326902) was in collision with cargo ship Glykofiloussa (IMO 9296236) on March 7th, near Frederikshavn. Team Explorer suffered minor damage to the aft and arrived at Frederikshavn on March 11th. Glykofiloussa suffered minor damage to the front end of the hull. No leaks were reported and an investigation was under way.

2007-built, Bermuda-flagged, 26,751 gt Team Explorer is owned by Team Tankers Deep Sea Ltd care of manager Team Tankers Management of Hellerup, Denmark. ISM manager is Selandia Ship Management of Mumbai, India. It is entered with Skuld (Copenhagen unit) on behalf of Team Tankers International Ltd.

2005-built, Malta-flagged, 38,871 gt Glykofiloussa is owned by Florale Shiptrade SA care of Astra Shipmanagement Inc of Athens, Greece. It is entered with North of England Club on behalf of Florale Shiptrade SA.

Cargo ship Yusuf Celal (IMO 7937874) ran aground near Topagac in Bandırma 50-60 meters off Marmara Island on March 13th in stormy seas, while loaded with gravel. The ship suffered a breach to the hull and, following massive water ingress, she eventually sank with the bow resting on the bottom, the deck being partially flooded with the superstructure and stern remaining above the waterline and a list to starboard side. The crew of six was rescued by a Coastal Safety lifeboat, a Coastguard boat and the nearby fishing boat Daglioglu.

1978-built, Turkey-flagged, 994 gt Yusuf Celal is owned by Coskun Denizcilik care of manager OF Shipping & Trading Co of Istanbul, Turkey.

Portuguese flagged container m/v BF Philipp (IMO 9123324) was in allision with Eduardo Junior (IMO 9289350) early on March 13th while coming from Ancona. The Eduardo Junior was moored at the quay in Ravenna. After having passed the curve at Marina di Ravenna, the container ship hit the tug at port side in the Candiano Canal with her bulbous bow. The bow tore open a tank of diesel fuel which poured into the water, causing a large spill. Emergency protocol was activated by the harbour master’s office. Oil booms were laid out around the damaged tug. The container ship was towed to her dock at the Ravenna Container Terminal.

1996-built, Portugal-flagged, 4,986 gt BF Philipp is owned by Marfeeder Schiffahrts care of BF Shipmanagement GmbH of Stade Niederelbe, Germany. It is entered with Hydor AS.

2003-built, Italy-flagged, 365 gt Eduardo Junior is owned and managed by SERS Srl of Ravenna, Italy. It is entered with Steamship Mutual (Smuab) (European syndicate) on behalf of Società Esercizio Rimorchi e Salvataggi – SERS. Srl.

Tanker Penyuan (IMO 9542104) requested medical assistance after a Filipino crew member was electrocuted during the afternoon of March 9th while en route from Ho Chi Minh City to Guangzhou. The ship was 50 miles off the coast of the Nha Trang Province at the time. It was later decided that the victim was in need of hospitalization. The tanker turned towards the Vietnamese coast to meet an SAR ship, and the man was medevaced on March 10th. 2009-built, Malaysia-flagged, 4,996 gt Penyuan is owned by Rich Connection Sdn Bhd care of manager Bayshore Shipping Services Pte of Singapore. ISM manager is Shinline Sdn Bhd of Sarawak, Malaysia. According to Equasis it is entered with Shipowners’ Club.

General cargo ship Southern Phoenix (IMO 8520434) was refloated during the afternoon of March 12th, but remained partially submerged. It was reported that more work needed to be done before any further movement of the vessel could be carried out. The salvage company will first pump in air to look for any other leaks in the hull which need to be sealed so that the vessel can be stabilized and moved. The towing of the vessel to its scuttling position will depend on the weather. 1986-built, Panama-flagged, 3,113 gt Southern Phoenix is owned and managed by Cruz Holdings of Suva, Fiji.
